Historic view of the Tower of London under a clear sky

Embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Europe as we relive our incredible 16-day family adventure across London, Edinburgh, and Dublin! As a lifelong admirer of English language and culture, visiting the United Kingdom and Ireland has always been a dream. This passion, cultivated during my years teaching English in Brazil, fueled a deep fascination with the UK’s unique charm, so different from my upbringing. Join us as we share a treasure trove of memories and stunning visuals from this epic trip, proving that even with a little one in tow, grand European explorations are not just possible, but incredibly rewarding.

The opportunity arose when my husband’s business trip to London in late June aligned perfectly with our desire for a new family adventure. We seized the chance to transform a work engagement into a comprehensive European holiday, meticulously planning our itinerary three months in advance. Our ambitious plan included spending 16 days hopping between three magnificent cities: London, Edinburgh, and the vibrant Irish capital, Dublin. Yes, you read that right – three countries in 16 days, all with our energetic 16-month-old son! Far from being a daunting challenge, this journey proved to be an absolute joy, filled with laughter, discovery, and countless precious family moments.

Understanding the demands of traveling with a toddler, I made the practical decision to leave my bulky camera at home. All the beautiful photographs you’ll see in this post were captured effortlessly with my iPhone, allowing me to focus more on experiencing each moment with my family. I hope you enjoy these candid snapshots as much as we cherished taking them, offering a genuine glimpse into our unforgettable adventure.

LONDON: A Royal Introduction to UK Charm

London has always held a special place in my imagination, long before I ever set foot on its historic streets. My teaching days in Brazil were rich with content about the UK, instilling in me a deep familiarity with London’s iconic landmarks and cultural tapestry. The moment we arrived, it was clear that the reality far surpassed my expectations. This global metropolis, bustling with life and brimming with history, immediately captivated us. It’s truly not difficult to fall in love with London; its sheer scale and diverse offerings ensure there’s something for every visitor, from the history buff to the modern explorer.

Much like Toronto, where we currently reside, London is a melting pot of cultures, a vibrant hub where traditions from around the world converge. This multicultural essence, combined with its globally renowned attractions, makes it an unparalleled travel destination. However, it’s crucial for prospective visitors to note that London is indeed an expensive city. Savvy travelers should plan and save diligently for several months prior to their visit to fully enjoy all it offers without financial stress. During our six days in London, we embarked on an ambitious itinerary, exploring numerous historical buildings, majestic castles, opulent palaces, serene gardens, sprawling parks, the fascinating zoo, ancient towers, and world-class museums. It was incredible what we managed to see and do, all while navigating the city with our little one. Every moment was packed with discovery and joy, creating an experience that my husband, son, and I will forever cherish.

EDINBURGH: Scotland’s Fairytale Capital

Our journey continued north to Edinburgh, the enchanting capital of Scotland. This incredible city, with its dramatic skyline and rich history, immediately struck us as a place unlike any other on Earth. It possesses a distinct fairytale quality, almost transporting you back to medieval times with its abundance of gothic architecture, ancient castle, royal palaces, and beautifully cobbled streets and gardens. Despite being a capital city, Edinburgh maintains a wonderfully cozy and intimate atmosphere, making it perfect for relaxing and enjoying excellent food without breaking the bank. The city’s charm truly captivated us, and we absolutely fell in love with its unique character.

One of Edinburgh’s greatest assets is its walkability. Most major attractions are conveniently located within walking distance of each other, making it an ideal destination for those who love to explore on foot. We thoroughly enjoyed our long strolls, discovering hidden gems around every corner. The historic Old Town, in particular, is a fascinating maze of remnants from old tunnels, mysterious caves, and areas rumored to be haunted, adding to the city’s mystique. A practical note for families: due to safety concerns, children under five are generally not permitted in some of these older, subterranean attractions, so plan accordingly.

While Edinburgh was magnificent, the weather during our visit proved to be quite a challenge, characterized by persistent rain, grey skies, and strong winds. Unfortunately, this limited our opportunities for extensive photography. However, we seized every brief respite from the downpour to capture what we could of this magical city. Despite the weather, our spirits remained high, and we made the most of every moment. So, without further ado, let’s scroll down and enjoy the pictures we managed to take, showcasing Edinburgh’s enduring beauty!
